Habits of heart and mind

EMBER

In the 1990s Arthur Costa and Bena Kallick developed the 16 Habits of Mind as ways to help articulate habits that would make students successful. Knowing middle schoolers, we knew we could not do all 16, but we did select five key habits for Howard Street. We then developed these habits into an acronym called EMBER.

All students learn to practice and reflect on the EMBER habits. These are a key pillar of our Advisory program which meets weekly on Wednesdays. All students have an advisor that is a key contact person. We do many activities in our advisory groups including our community service events.
